Research with and for society
How does research benefit society? And how can society contribute to science? These questions were at the heart of 2023’s Research and Transfer Day.
The transfer of knowledge to society, culture, business and politics, and the integration of knowledge from these areas into science, is becoming an increasingly important focus of science policy. This is why the organising team of the 2023 Research and Transfer Day chose the theme “Research with and for society”.
Following the opening adress by BHT Vice President BHT for Research and Transfer Prof. Dr. Silke Köhler and the welcome speech by BHT President Dr. Julia Neuhaus, Dr. Mirjam Jenny, a researcher at the Institute for Planetary Health Behaviour at the University of Erfurt, gave a keynote speech titled “Communicating Science Effectively”. The institute’s work covers climate protection, vaccinations and pandemics, as well as misinformation and trust in the media. In addition to research and teaching, science communication is one of the institute's core activities. Jenny sums this up as “understanding behaviour in order to change behaviour”.
Afterwards, the audience found out about BHT’s latest research and transfer projects through an innovative presentation. Rather than having all the scientists present their findings on stage, Prof. Dr. Yasmin Olteanu, the host, took a walk through the Beuth-Halle and met them at their exhibition stands, accompanied by a cameraman from BHT’s educational film studio. The audience watched live on the screen above the stage as Olteanu asked each scientist to give a short pitch about their project. During Olteanu's tour and the subsequent get-together, the BHT projects were at the centre of attention. Among them, BHT’s collaborative research units HARMONIK, Data Science +X, Sustainable Cities and IMPACT.
