The first Summer School on Sustainable Design for Low Carbon Buildings & Cities took place from 30 August to 13 September 2021. It is another successful milestone in the history of our ARS-SummerSchools since 2006, based at Berlin University of Applied Sciences and Technology (BHT).

This year, the Summer School happened in an online format again. Even so, this event for exchange between students from different countries was very successful. Opened to every students and doctoral candidates, it gathered 54 participants plus supervisors from the individual universities from all over the world together: Three different partner universities from Brazil, one partner university in Turkey, one in Oman and students from Russia, Australia, Ukraine and Germany.

Funded by the DAAD, the Summer School 2021 was organised by the Institute of Distance Learning and the Department IV - Architecture and Building Services of the BHT in partnership with the Brazilian Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Universidade La Salle and Universidade Federal Fluminense, the Middle East Technology University from Turkey and the German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech).

During the two weeks, presentations on post carbon cities of tomorrow, techniques and solutions about the use of renewable energy in demand and construction of buildings, low carbon architecture as well as Circular Economy/Life Cycle of materials and buildings were given by international experts. This served as preparation for the project task for the participants. 11 international student groups worked on the design of a campus pavilion, which the groups were to design for one of the locations of the participating universities.

In the end there were four winning teams and two second places.

The winning teams were:

- BRT10 (Anastasia, Simruy, Bruna, Larrissa, Mila)

- TAIPAvillion (Lucas, Caroline, Victoria, Thatiana, Anastasia)
- Petrópolis Next (Karine, Cameron, Maria Clara, Nisa, Ganna)

- SUSTAINABLE_PAVILION (Tarcísio, Camila, Luiza, Vagner, Josephine)

The teams

- Bee-Cool-Haus (Fadi, Esha, Nusrat, Jassem, Sheila) and

- Biophilic house (Sofya, Carolina, Alejandra, Tiffany, Sofiya) took the second place.

The teams were awarded with 300€ and 200€ respectively. These awards were sponsored by our supporters, Fördergemeinschaft Bauwesen and Förderverein Versorgungstechnik.

Once again, the active participation and exchange during the lectures (despite a with very large time difference for some of the participants) were very pertinent, filled with interesting questions and could have last way longer if we had not to unwillingly cut them short.
We’ve also been impressed from the results of the groups in such a short time and in spite of the virtual work organisation.

Thanks to everyone who have organised this great event!

We were very happy to share this with all of them and are looking forward to the next Summer School in 2022 - the ARS22!
