At the 2026 German-Brazilian Symposium on Sustainable Development in Belém, we co-host a session with Armin Mathis (Director of the NAEA—Núcleo de Altos Estudos Amazonicos at the University of Pará; photo above left) on the topic of “Responsible Mining for a Sustainable Future” and present our project findings for discussion, among other topics.   More

In a recent feature, we also discuss the "Memorandum of Understanding on Scientific and Technological Cooperation in the Field of Critical Strategic Mineral Resources" between Germany and Brazil.

In August 2025, during their fieldtrip to Ontario, Canada, the project team of Ethical Mining from Aachen and Berlin attended a special lecture on the ecology, the geology and the restoration of the wider Sudbury region by Prof. em. Peter Beckett and Prof. em. Graeme Spiers at the „Living with Lakes Centre“, Laurentian University, Ontario.

Peter is an expert in the restoration of mining-impacted landscapes and wetlands and Graeme is expert on soil science and the ecological impacts of mining. The lecture was followed by a discussion on the region’s unique landscape and its ecological development.

At the CSRcamps 2024 and 2025 in Berlin, we contribute insights from our project to the societal discourse.
We discuss our research project with experts and answer critical questions from interested civil society actors.

Prof. Dr. Luiz Carlos Bombassaro (1st Foto) from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in Porto Alegre, Brazil,  reports on the discourse surrounding raw material extraction in Brazil and discusses the project’s interim findings with the BHT Ethical Mining research team.

In cooperation with Luiz Bombassaro, Annalouise Harks (3rd Foto), Berliner Hochschule für Technik (BHT), Germany, is writing her Master’s thesis on the topic “Interplay of raw material extraction associated with the global energy transition, exemplified by Brazil and Germany.
