The university was founded over 150 years ago on the premise of integrating the disciplines of engineering and design. This ambition is was closely linked to the work of Peter Joseph Lenné, Christian Peter Wilhelm Beuth, Carl Friedrich Gauß, Karl Friedrich Schinkel and Ludwig Hoffmann, whose impact shaped the academic environment significantly.
Today, the university offers students an integrated curriculum focussed on architectural design that maximizes the potential of new technologies in engineering and new lessons in sustainability. The last two decades have seen the BHT emerge as the most technical of all architecture programs in Berlin. With over 12.000 students enrolled, the BHT is upon the largest schools of applied science and the second largest school of engineering in Berlin.
The architecture program considers these two departments valuable resources and is continuously finding ways to work across the disciplines. Beyond academics, the BHT has a reputation as a reliable partner to regional industries and businesses doing work in and around Berlin.
BHT Berlin has implemented the academic standards of the Bologna Process and was the first university in Berlin to switch all academic programs into the new system. Adopting the Berlin process has enabled the BHT to attract students from across Europe and, indeed, the world.
