Justus started working as a Research Assistent in the new team in the interdisciplinary DFG-funded research project "Berlin Initiative for Applied Foundation Model Research" (Appl-FM) in April 2024.
He graduated with a Master's degree in Mathematics from the University of Münster in 2021 with a focus on differential geometry and topology. After his studies, he worked as a Research Engineer at GRIMME where he specialized in the automation technology team on sensor technology, computer vision and, primarily, machine and reinforcement learning.
The Appl-FM project, funded by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG / Forschungsimpulse), aims to contribute to the advancement of applied foundational research in the realm of Foundation Models (FM). These FMs are tailored to address specific needs and challenges, particularly in the domains of robotics, quantitative biology, and predictive medicine. Led by a consortium of interdisciplinary experts, the project seeks to harness the potential of autonomously learning robots to supplement human resources and to empower medical practitioners with advanced diagnostic support systems. Through a focus on optimized training methodologies, integration of neuroscientific insights, continuous machine learning, and seamless incorporation into robotics, the project endeavors to expand the frontiers of foundational research and facilitate its practical application, ensuring robustness, fairness, and explainability in AI systems.
