The spread of antibiotic resistance in clinical settings and the environment, and the resulting emergence of multidrug-resistant pathogens, pose a major global problem. To reduce the spread of antibiotic resistance, the molecular mechanisms underlying its dissemination via conjugative type IV secretion systems must be elucidated. In this research project, we use molecular biological and biochemical methods to decipher the transfer mechanisms of the broad-host-range conjugative antibiotic resistance plasmid pIP501 in Gram-positive bacteria.

This is a project conducted by BHT doctoral candidate Michelle Bölcke (successor to Dr Claudia Michaelis) under the supervision of Prof. Dr. habil. Elisabeth Grohmann.
