Prof. Dr. Steffen Prowe has been Professor of Microbiology at the Berliner Hochschule für Technik since April 2009. During his tenure, he has held several leadership positions, including Dean of the Department of Life Sciences and Technology and member of the Academic Senate.

Before joining academia, Prof. Prowe held senior positions in industry. He served as Head of the Microbiological Development Laboratory at Bayer Schering Pharma AG and previously worked as Laboratory Manager and Head of Product Development at Biotex in Hamburg.

He studied at the University of Göttingen and earned his doctorate at the Hamburg University of Technology (TU Hamburg) in 1996. His doctoral research resulted in two patent applications. His academic career has also included research stays at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands.

Prof. Prowe has successfully acquired substantial third-party funding for research and innovation projects. Since 2021, he has led the MINT-VR-Labs project, which is funded by the Foundation for Innovation in Higher Education (Stiftung Innovation in der Hochschullehre) with approximately €1.96 million.

In addition, in 2020 he became co-applicant for the Human-VR-Lab project, which received approximately €1.3 million in funding through the FH-Invest program. He has also contributed to several other externally funded projects, including an EFRE-Invest project and another FH-Invest initiative, with a combined funding volume of approximately €1.35 million. In 2014, he participated in a DAAD Fact Finding Mission to Senegal.

Beyond his teaching and research activities, Prof. Prowe is actively involved in university service at the Berliner Hochschule für Technik. Among other roles, he is a member of the Innovation Research Center (IRC) working group and the Refugees Welcome coordination team.
